Bachelor - STEOP Mentoring

STEOP Mentoring

The content and the design depend on the respective mentors and have the goal to familiarize the new students with the organisation of the University of Vienna and to answer questions about the study of nutritional sciences. One of the goals of the mentors is the networking of the students with each other, so that they can use common interests and synergies in the future (e.g. in the form of study groups, exchange of notes, ...).

Mentors provide orientation in the university environment, help students get to know the most important tools (u:find, u:space, moodle, exam calendar, webmail, etc.) and support students in planning their semester. The mentors accompany the students from the beginning of their studies, through the STEOP phase, until the end of the semester.

The mentoring meetings take place at regular intervals during the first semester and aim to improve the mentees' ability to act in order to make a lasting contribution to motivated, committed and successful study behavior.

Information für students (Mentees)

The content and the design depend on the respective mentors and have the goal to familiarize the new students (students in the 1st or 2nd semester) with the organization of the university and to answer questions about the study programs of our faculty. One of the goals of the mentors is the networking of the students among each other, so that they can use common interests and synergies in the future (e.g. in the form of study groups, exchange of notes, ...).

In the first units, the mentors provide orientation in the university environment, help students get to know the most important tools (u:find, u:space, moodle, exam calendar, webmail, etc.) and support students in planning their semester.

The mentors accompany the students from the beginning of their studies, through the STEOP phase, until the end of the semester.

The mentoring meetings take place at regular intervals during the winter semester and aim to improve the mentees' ability to act in order to make a lasting contribution to motivated, committed and successful study behavior.

You will receive more detailed information about the dates and the process after registration or assignment to your mentors.

Information for (future) mentors

The goal of mentoring is to support first-year students in small groups in finding their way around the university environment and to make the introductory and orientation phase for first-year students more networking and interactive, according to the motto "From students for students".

The mentors support the first-year students in particular in organizing their studies, preparing for the StEOP examinations, networking with other students and forming study groups.
Mentoring is intended to promote "active studying". This means that first-year students are motivated to complete the STEOP examinations and thus acquire the best prerequisites for the further course of their studies.

Mentors should therefore have already completed a few semesters of the bachelor's program and, of course, have successfully completed the STEOP.

Tasks of the mentors

Each mentor leads a group of about 20 students and organizes regular meetings with the new students during the first semester. The general content of the meetings is developed jointly by the mentors, supported by the SPL and faculty representatives. Creativity and individuality are desired in the implementation of the topics.

The team of STEOP mentors in economics consists of up to 12 mentors and is supported by SPL and faculty representatives, as well as a Moodle course throughout the semester.

Mentors must complete the 1-day qualification workshop "Leading Peer Mentoring Groups" of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) before the start of the semester (mid-September). Please keep the following date free for this:

  • Tuesday, 14 September 2021, 9.00 am to 5.00 pm (Instructor: Barbara Korb)

In addition, at least 1 workshop from the CTL offerings (e.g. "Leading groups", "Learning to learn", "Procrastination", "Diversity") must be attended.

Prior to the start of the mentoring activity as well as during the semester, attendance of the accompanying course is mandatory. Information on this can be found at u:find.

Finally, each mentor must submit a short report reflecting on the mentoring activity.

After successfully completing the STEOP mentoring, you will receive a certificate of participation from the CTL for your CV as well as 4 ECTS that can be used for the alternative extension in the Bachelor elective module.

Thank you very much! Registration is closed.
