Final oral examination

General information about final oral exams

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Master exams have to be carried out as online video exams until further notice due to Covid-19. Please organise the date and exam committee together with your supervisor after you've completed all courses according to your curriculum. Specifications for the various Master curricula can be found below.
  • IMPORTANT: New submission deadlines starting October 1, 2020: All necessary documents need to be submitted via email to ssc-wiwi@univie.ac.at 3 weeks before the planned exam date at the very latest. Please submit the Registration for Defence AND Application for Graduation (available in Downloadcenter)
  • Registration procedere and deadlines are  mandatory. If you submit too late, incomplete documents or if your are still missing grades, you have no guarantee of the planned exam date. Incomplete registration documents will not be further processed and not actively kept on file. Please do not set up the exam too close after submitting your MA thesis (your supervisor has up to 8 weeks for evaluating and grading your thesis).
  • The SSC will check your documents and forward them for approval to the director of the study programme (SPL). Please wait for the email confirmation which is going to be sent with the minutes of the exam to you and the comittee. To reserve the exam date (or book a room), please contact the secretary of your supervisor in time.
  • You need a chairperson as part of the exam comittee. Your suüepervisor is supposed to suggest someone and might also contact that person drirectly, - if you are having trouble finding a chairperson, please submit your registration without one. The director of the study programme (SPL) will have to assign someone.
  • The chairperson will moderate the exam, decide which conference tool to use and invite all participants to the video conference. He or she will also fill out the minutes of the exam and return those to the SSC. Grade(s) will be entered by the SSC upon receipt of the minutes.
  • Your examiners determine the content of your exam subjects (what and how long) - please make sure to contact them in time to specify the exam topics and material.
  • Students are allowed a person of trust to be present during the exam. Examiners may invite another person assisting in an observing role. Further persons apart from student and comittee are not recommended to ensure a stable connection and to avoid legal problems during the non-public discussion part of the exam comittee.

More information about video exams and what to consider is available on the website of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL): https://ctl.univie.ac.at/en/remote-learning/exams/
