Admission Procedure

The admission procedure for the PhD programmes in

consists of two stages. The first stage requires the submission of application materials. Applicants whose materials receive a positive evaluation in the first stage will be invited to an oral examination in the second stage.

Application Materials

The applicant is required to submit a fully completed application forms and all of the following documents:

  • application forms:
  • transcript(s) showing receipt of a master’s or equivalent degree (or degrees) in an appropriate field according to § 64 (4) of the 2002 University Act in the current version and transcripts of previous university studies.
  • proof of English proficiency
    • proof that English is the applicant’s native language or
    • proof of successful completion of a degree programme in which English was the primary language of instruction or
    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 250 (computer-based), 100 (internet-based), or 600 (paper-based) or
    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 7 (no band below 6) or
    • other equivalent proof.
  • statement of purpose describing the applicant’s goals and explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue the selected PhD programme at the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Statistics.
  • research proposal indicating the applicant’s research interests and methodological approach.

All materials must be submitted online and/or scanned and submitted by email to phd.wiwi@univie.ac.at before the deadline. Incomplete applications cannot be considered for the oral examination. The doctoral programme directors may also provide on this website more detailed information on the requirements listed above.

Oral Examination

The oral examination serves to review carefully the applicant’s knowledge of her/his proposed research area, methodological background, and academic preparation, considering also the fit between the applicant’s research interests and the faculty’s research areas.
The oral examination will be administered in September 2011 for the Winter 2011 semester at the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Statistics at the University of Vienna by a separate committee for each program. Typically, the committee consists of the programme’s doctoral advisory board. The oral examination will take place in Vienna at one of the faculty’s buildings. Applicants will be informed by email about the exact date, building and room number, etc. Attendance in Vienna is required. Telephone interviews are not possible. The committee may require additional written materials (e.g., writing sample, reference letters) for the oral examination. Oral Exam PhD-Management

The oral examination reviews the applicant’s knowledge of her/his proposed research area, methodological background, and academic preparation. For instance, if your research interests focus on analytical studies in management accounting (empirical studies in marketing), the committee tests your knowledge in management accounting (marketing) as well as your analytical skills (understanding of statistical methods). In keeping with academic standards, we can only advise a doctoral thesis in a research field that is represented by the faculty. These research fields can be found on individual faculty homepages.

  • PhD-Programme Finance:

  • PhD-Programme Logistics and Operations Management and
  • PhD-Programme Management:
    • Applications for the Winter 2012 semester will be accepted from 15 March 2012 to 13 July 2012.
    • Application materials received after this deadlines cannot be considered.
  • PhD-Programme Statistics and Operations Research:
    • Applications for the Winter 2012 semester will be accepted from 15 March 2012 to 15 June 2012.
    • Application materials received after this deadlines cannot be considered.

Procedure

The result of the admission procedure is the acceptance or rejection of the applicant. Acceptance may also be made conditional on the successful completion of courses specified in advance by the admission committee.
